The planet’s first quad-camera smartphone is official. Meet the all-new Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018)
Korean tech giant Samsung debuted the Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) premium mid-range smartphone earlier today. The device appears to be the world’s first smartphone to feature 4 cameras at the rear. More on that later…
Huge Super AMOLED display, SD660 SoC and more
The Galaxy A9 (2018) is powered by an upper mid-range grade Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC coupled with an Adreno 512 GPU aided by 6GB of RAM or 8GB of RAM. Internal storage is generous at 128GB regardless of the RAM configuration. Thankfully, a dedicated MicroSD card slot that can handle cards of up to 512GB in size is available in the device for expanded storage.
Providing visuals is a 6.3-inch 1080 x 2220 pixels Full HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity display with an aspect ratio of 18:5:9 and an OKish pixel density of 392PPI. As expected, the Galaxy A9 (2018) is equipped with a fingerprint scanner at the back and also features face unlock as biometric authentication options. Also, Samsung’s Bixby assistant is onboard and to access it, all you have to do is just tap the dedicated Bixby button located to the left of the device.
Whoever said dual cameras are a gimmick, now we have a quad camera setup…!
Photography is handled by a world’s first quad-camera setup on a smartphone at the rear: A 24MP sensor featuring a bright f/1.7 lens suitable for day and night time shots. Next, above the main sensor is a telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and captures 10MP (f/2.4) stills. Moving on, above the telephoto camera, we have a 120° ultra-wide 8MP (f/2.4) sensor for well, ultra wide shots. And last but not the least, below the main camera we have a 5MP (f/2.2) depth sensor for those amazing bokeh shots. A 24MP (f/2.0) selfie shooter is featured up front.
The rear and front-facing cams can record video at a resolution of up to 4K @ 30fps and 1080p @ 30fps respectively.
Battery, connectivity and Android version
A massive and impressive 3800mAh battery is onboard the giant Galaxy A9 (2018) to provide more than enough juice to keep the lights on and also the device comes bundled with a 15W Adaptive Fast Charging charger to top it up fast enough in the morning via the USB Type-C port.
Coming to the connectivity side of the Galaxy A9 (2018), it has you all covered with Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0 LE, A2DP and EDR, GPS for navigation and location-based services and much more. Thankfully, the device retains the good old headphone jack we all have been loving for years. The Galaxy A9 (2018) runs on Android 8.0 (seriously, Sammy?, why no 8.1, phew!) Oreo-based Samsung Experience UI out of the box.
Pricing, availability and paint jobs
The pricing and availability are yet to known and confirmed. As far as color options are concerned the Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) will be available in a gorgeous Lemonade Blue, understated Caviar Black, and beautiful Bubblegum Pink.
No-notchsense design and at the same time, an inspired camera module setup
Design wise the Galaxy A9 (2018) features the trendy 18:9 aspect ratio display that doesn’t employ a notch, props to Sammy for that. However, flip the device and at the rear, you are welcomed by a vertical camera module featuring 4 sensors. With that said, Samsung seems to have taken a page from Apple’s book for that vertical camera module design but definitely not for those 4 sensors, those are Samsung originals and also a world-first.
